The bottom line is that the requirement to use the iPad Photos app to access your photos on a flash card, plus the connectivity issues, means the iPad is not something that a professional would likely tolerate. And the inability for apps to read photos in their original form and location prevents developers from creating an app, even a simple one, that would be useful for professionals. Forget about workflows used by large organizations that rely upon metadata such as the camera serial number. From what we can surmise, the iPad is meant for the consumption of media, not the production of media content. If Apple changes their mind or provides some other type of direct iPhone OS/SDK access to the photos on a card (or in a camera), then we will investigate further the possibility of a mobile app for the iPad. At this point it is darn near impossible for us to provide what we would consider a useful app, something besides a gimmick or curiosity. We’re sorry. Talk to Apple and let them know you can’t justify buying their devices until they open up access for apps to read YOUR photos directly from YOUR flash card. And tell Apple that you want another CCK part that allows a CF card to be inserted directly.
He’s got some valid points in his open letter and it makes sense they don’t want to spend time on app when crucial things aren’t in place right now.
Many have already stated that the iPad is meant for content consumption rather than creation.
I wonder whether (and how) Apple will change its stance on the problems he’s mentioning. Especially his point about metadata being lost when a 3rd party app accesses photos should be easy and important enough to be fixed in an upcoming version of the iPhone OS. Then again, maybe Apple doesn’t see professionals using iPads for this kind of work in the first place.

I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true. Let me explain.

Once upon a time I bought this iPod camera connector to use it with my iPod 5G. This small dongle basically converts the proprietary dock connector into a USB socket, to which you could connect your camera. Of course, I never used it back in the day, because it was too slow and cumbersome to actually use it with the iPod.

Currently, Apple’s stock is at an all time high. A share today is worth over 40 times its value seven years ago. So, how much would you have today if you purchased stock instead of an Apple product? See for yourself in the table below. A huge thanks to everymac.com for the original prices and release dates. All values are calculated using Apple’s stock price of $270.38/share.

[..] I believe (and have heard) that the engineer who lost his iPhone 4G has not been fired. Perhaps the case was examined on an individual basis and determined not to have been one of violating Apple policy too much or not one where Apple was injured sufficiently. I’m glad for now. I hate to see people lose their jobs ever.
But I can tell you that the test engineer who showed me an iPad after midnight, for 2 minutes, during the iPad launch was indeed fired. I opted to spend 2 minutes with Numbers on this iPad, trying some stunts I’d seen on Apple’s website demo video. I was not told that it was a 3G model and I had no way to know that. I was told that this engineer had to wait until midnight to show it outside of Apple’s secure area. And I’m an Apple employee who he was showing it to. My guess is that he was allowed to take the iPad outside of the secure area but still not supposed to show it. [..]

[..] publishing the name, photographs, and personal information of the Apple engineer who lost the phone is irrelevant to the story. It was the dick move to end all dick moves. Gizmodo is, ostensibly, a gadget site. The interest of their readers in this saga regards the phone. Publishing his name did not clarify in the least bit how they obtained the phone. The people whose identities I’d like to know are those who obtained and then sold the phone, not the guy from Apple who lost it. There is no interest served by outing him other than taking sociopathic glee in making a public spectacle of someone who made a very serious but honest mistake.
This, I’m deeply offended by.
John Gruber on the case of the lost iPhone. Great summary of the things that happened.

This document provides details of the iPad/iPhone OS 3.2 DHCP issue Princeton University began seeing in April 2010. It provides information for individuals who would like more technical details about the issue.
In short: The iPad is getting an IP address but doesn’t respect the lease time and still keeps the old IP even though the lease has expired. I wonder how things like these can still happen? It’s not like it’s a new protocol or something.

Most of these tweaks, besides providing for a longer lifespan for SSD disks, should improve overall system performance even on an non SSD disk. Of course you will use them at your own risk…
Interesting summary of some things you can do to increase SSD performance using OS X. The basic ideas also apply to other *nix OS’.

It was Tuesday morning and I started the day as usual, scanning through the nightly mails and twitter. Then there are these posts making me think it’s April Fools all over again: Opera Mini hit the App Store. I honestly didn’t expect Apple to approve that one. I have my suspicions as to why Apple did approve it, but let’s talk about that later. Opera already made a big deal about this whole thing on multiple occasions and even included a timer to show how long it took Apple to make the browser available in the App Store.
